Excerpts

God had made Man in His image, Roman had heard. He wondered which god would claim the body on the aluminum table.

'Caucasian female, age approximately twenty to twenty-five. Hair brown, eyes blue.' The medical examiner spoke into a microphone clipped onto the lapel of his white smock. A wire from it led to the tape recorder in a roomy pocket.

'The body has been dismembered into six separate parts,' he went on in a monotone. 'Otherwise it appears to be that of a healthy female. All the teeth are present, although there are silver fillings on each of the upper right molars. There is a small scar under the chin. No digits [fingers] are missing. There is some bruising of tissue on the knuckle of the fourth metacarpal, where a ring has been removed while alive or shortly afterward.'

There were four men around the table. Roman wasn't a weak man; he'd seen death before. But the others, including [Sergeant] Isadore, had professional objectivity to fall back on. He didn't, and the disassembled horror of the sterile room was a revelation to him. He'd never considered that put back together, the human body resembled a misshapen octopus more than anything else.

The examiner had pulled back a flap of scalp and sawed through the skull for the brain. One cuff raised an eyelid to reveal a blue eye that stared at Roman with a madly askew iris.

'There is no sign of hematoma.'

The brain, a convoluted ruby, was weighed and deposited in a glass jar. The examiner's assistant wrote out a label, licked the back and applied it to the jar.

'You've got to admit it's easier this way,' the assistant said as he pushed the legs and arms to one side. 

The examiner opened the chest cavity and removed the heart and lungs and studied the interior of the cavity for fractured ribs. As a team, he and the assistant cut out the intestinal tract, the liver, spleen, pancreas and kidneys. When they had finished examining them, they placed the organs in glass-top fruit jars and sealed the tops with wax. The assistant wrote out more labels while the examiner drew blood for a typing, two men cataloguing a treasure.

The police reported the girl had come from the Cadillac Eldorado driven by Nanoosh Pulneshti. Nanoosh had started from Montevideo, Uruguay, gathering pieces for Roman.

'No spermatozoa,' the assistant said after looking at a smear under the microscope.

'Can you give me a closer age, Doctor?' Isadore [Sergeant Harry Isadore] asked.

The examiner prodded the jaw open again while the assistant held the head steady.

'From the wear on the teeth' - he cut a thin line into the gum - 'and the immaturity of the roots of the third molar, I would venture closer to twenty years than twenty-five.' He pushed the jaw closed and shrugged. 'She's not a virgin, but she's never borne a child or had an abortion. No evidence of drugs.'

At the end of all this the examiner paused and glanced at [Sergeant] Isadore. His assistant was at the ready, rolling forward a tray with its container of formalin, alcohol and carmine to embalm the parts.

'Is that all, Sergeant? We'd like to clean up.'

'Hold it.' He gestured for Roman. 'One last thing.'

Roman stood next to Isadore above the cool table with its display of meat.

'Is she Gypsy?' [Sergeant] Isadore asked.

There was no way of avoiding it now. Roman looked, concentrating on minute points, refusing the whole.

'No.'

'Then how do you explain it?' [Sergeant] Isadore asked.

'Explain what?'

'How she could think your friend Nanoosh was her friend?'

Roman didn't know what to say. Isadore was Roman's friend, too.

Roman had him pegged now. Howie was Priculics. During the day, Priculics was a beautiful young man. At night he was a huge black dog that killed and devoured anything he met. He'd hunted Faust, and now he was hunting them, padding through the woods on all fours with his beautiful shining teeth. 

'Roman.'

He shook his head. He'd fallen asleep.

'Roman, it must be wonderful being a Gypsy.'

'Why?'

'You don't have to be scared of anything. I've been afraid all my life. With you, nothing can happen."

'Shhh.'

'It's so peaceful, like the end of the world,' she said. 'I don't mean destruction. I mean as if their world ended over there.'

'Finisterre.'

'Right. And we'd make our own laws. Like we'd have things rise instead of fall and water could run upstream.' She crouched next to his knee for warmth. 'Is it silly to want that?'

'Everybody wants that.'

She was answering him when he put his finger over her lips. The white blur was moving through the trees again closer than Roman had expected. Hillary's body was close to Roman's, and he heard her heartbeat go from a placid rhythm to terror. Howie was looking up at them, studying the shadows inside the apron of branches.

'You're alive.' Hillary stepped from a tree timidly, afraid to believe her eyes. 'You're alive,' she said with more certainty. 'He couldn't kill you. I saw it.' She touched his face.

'Ouch,' he said as he massaged a raw sore. It shook her, and he added, 'I know I'm invulnerable, but even a Gypsy [note capital G] likes sympathy. Howie's going to be here soon so we'd better go.'

They had gravity going their way, and they slid on the seat of their pants through a rustle of [pine] needles. He led her through the dark maze as if it were day. Once or twice she thought she saw a contented smile on his face.

The roller coaster ended when his arm shot out and grabbed her. Hillary skidded on her back to a stop. Overhead the pines were bordering a blank sky.

'What is it?' She sat up and found herself on the edge of a rock shelf. Her feet dangled over a twenty-foot drop.

'We face Howie. I should have faced Howie after I went to your house. I didn't. Well, Howie's coming down this hill any minute, and I'll have to face him.'

'You don't seem very sorry.'

'It's easier for me. You should split now. If things go wrong, you can hide until he leaves.'

'I have to watch.' She shook her head.

'He may get lucky.'

'Howie doesn't have a chance. I always knew that.'

He thought she was babbling about magic again until he caught the pinholes of pain in her eyes. She was talking about something he knew very little of, that he wanted to know nothing of.

'That's it then.' He took her hand.

'What are you doing?'

'Howie set a trap for us. We set a trap for him.'

Howie didn't move as Roman passed the sword up to Hillary, and didn't start as Roman turned him over. His last surprise was in his face. Roman quickly rearranged it, closing the eyes and drawing the corners of the mouth down.  It was more than he could do for the girl on the aluminum table, but Howie still looked like a broken bust put back, completely ruined.

TOO LONG

The excessive length of some videos on YouTube prevents Me from watching the videos. I am put off by their sheer length. If I skip them when they FIRST appear on the screen, I find that YouTube algorithm computers usually make them disappear from the screen to make room for other videos! Searching for videos is such a hassle! Perhaps a long video presented as successive short part-videos would make Me want to watch the complete video.
