An excellent lesson on silent letters in English. Veronika, despite her pensive and melancholic face (probably caused by weltschmerz, world-weariness), is an excellent teacher of English. She gives the pronunciation of each word with a silent letter (from a to w) and gives an example sentence to illustrate the word. (What she calls silent a is actually schwa but she probably thought calling it schwa would scare her listeners, though schwa is a very common sound in English and is very easy to learn.)

I knew the correct pronunciation of ALL the words she teaches in this interesting lesson except one word I had never seen or heard before: BAGUETTE (where u is silent). I looked at pictures of baguette in Google and come to the conclusion that baguette is what we Indians call CREAM ROLL.

IIT STUDENTS
Looking at YouTube videos of students of IIT Guwahati (Guwahati is also My home town), I get the strong impression - this is an impression - that the poor boys and girls who somehow managed to get into IIT Guwahati (and other IITs) by hook or by crook are trapped and forced to live in a virtual jail for 4 years (or more). A few have committed suicide, sadly. The poor students are not academically inclined but forced to keep up appearances. My heart bleeds for them (idiom, not literal of course). I have visited IIT library and borrowed and returned a few books from that library through an IIT office staff. I have attended a research seminar and also attended an inspiring lecture by the noted Indian scientist Professor C. N. R. Rao which was held in the auditorium of IIT Guwahati. I went to and from IIT by IIT bus. Poor IIT students are like fish out of water. (TRAPPED male and female TOP Nazis?)
Studying is the most difficult thing in the world. Everything else is much easier - s., dating, doing business, working in office or factory, ploughing and tilling the land, farming, singing, dancing, playing games etc.

LENGTH OF VIDEOS
Before I decide to watch ANY YouTube video, I always look at the length of that video as mentioned in the title. If it is too long, I almost always skip that video. But a very short YouTube video need NOT be an interesting video JUST BECAUSE it is very short. To be interesting, a very short YouTube video should be complete and satisfying and not pointlessly short and skimpy. It should be pithy and compact.
Excessively short pointless videos can be very irritating and reveal undue haste and lack of proper planning. I may watch very short unsatisfactory YouTube videos to the end but always feel like I have wasted My time. And I don't like insincere false titles and videos. Sincerity is the most important requirement of a good talk or video. I don't like insincerity in anyone. My Anchor podcasts are moving because My voice is 100% sincere and genuine.

I learned IPA symbols on My own many years ago when I was a school student. A teacher criticized My pronunciation of an English word. Cut to the quick (I was the first boy in class), I sought to perfect My English pronunciation and bought a book on English pronunciation from a foot path second hand bookseller in Panbazar in My home town Guwahati (that was many years ago) and memorized IPA symbols explained in that book! I have noticed, in My case at any rate, that there is always a bright side to every situation in life!
I use RP (Received Pronunciation) and IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).
I have lots of excellent standard English dictionaries - LONGMAN Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, Cambridge International Dictionary of English, Collins COBUILD Essential English Dictionary, Collins COBUILD Advanced Illustrated Dictionary, Collins COBUILD Learner's Illustrated Dictionary, Penguin English Student's Dictionary, Harrap's Easy English Dictionary ("ideal for all learners of English"), Chambers Universal Learners' Dictionary, 21st Century English Dictionary (Viva Books), Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Goyal Publishers & Distributors), etc. - which use IPA or similar symbols for pronunciation and give meanings and example sentences to show how words are used.
COLLINS PLAIN ENGLISH DICTIONARY, LONGMAN Language Activator, OXFORD LEARNER'S Wordfinder DICTIONARY are delightful books on words. (I do have OXFORD DICTIONARY OF DIFFICULT WORDS.)
Words in Indian languages like Sanskrit, Bengali, Assamese, Hindi have phonetic spellings, so that the sounds of words in these languages can be correctly known from their spellings. Not so English. IPA is the answer.
Many years ago, I bought Linguaphone LP English conversation records from British Institutes in Bombay (Mumbai) when I was a college student. I bought a second-hand gramophone record player to play the Linguaphone records. The gramophone spring was wound up by turning a handle, like old car engines were started by turning a crank handle. (I am not sure about the technical terms - correct Me if I am wrong. I still have My excellent Linguaphone records but I no longer have My gramophone player - it was probably sold away when I was in America on university scholarships to study and do research at the two top US universities UIUC and UIC.) I remember that Mrs. L. Lall of Linguaphone/British Institutes, Mumbai, was very helpful in her correspondences with Me.

"Listen to what, as a Marian girl, I have to say to you. We who bear within us new generations of Marians have had passed down to us the injunction of the Great Elder."

Ena took him by a roundabout path. Descending steeply, it led them into a stalagmite cave which was evidently directly underneath the Cave of Youth.
Ena pointed at the roof.
"The Elder above is pointing downwards, and if you follow the line of direction, it runs through a stalactite to indicate some writings."
Sure enough, under the stalactite there was a stone slab fashioned from the base of a removed stalagmite. [Remember: a stalactite inside a cave is above, and it meets a rising stalagmite which rises from the floor of the cave; stalaCtite - Ceiling - above; stalaGmite - Ground - floor of the cave - below] The deposits on it had been carefully cleaned off.
"Read it!" commanded Ena.
Some passages in the inscription seemed particularly strange to Tome Polar.
"Never must the Marians, descendants of the Faetians, touch those fields of knowledge which led to the destruction of the beautiful Faena. Never must they strive to learn of what matter consists [reveal secrets of immortality and eternal youth and other f. "secrets" of f. NAZIS]. Ena sat beside him on a rock [NOTE: rock - petro - Peter] near the stalactite with the inscriptions and told him in a sad voice everything she had learned from her mother about the destruction of Faena.
The exasperated Tome Polar refused to listen.
Convinced that a Marian girl's fictitious duty, to save the population of Mar from future disasters, was being put higher than her own love for him, Tome Polar decided that she did not truly love him.
Hot-tempered, vain, and, moreover, not one to acknowledge half-measures, he broke it off with the girl he loved and walked out of the stalactite cave on his own.
