A few days ago, My consort showed Me an error in the time shown by the OPPO mobile I had given her to use: 6 a.m. for 10 a.m., say. I believed her, and I thought it was a virus attack, just as all pseudo doctors attribute every case of fever as due to one virus or another. Two or three days ago, My consort got a new Samsung smartphone for 10,000 rupees as a gift from her youngest bro. A struggling low income guy spending Rs.10,000 to buy a smartphone for his (one and only) elder sister (she is the eldest and all her four bros. are younger than her; she has no sister - what a relief, isn't it?) may cause overt or covert (secret) jealousy even in his simpleton young wife. Suddenly I had a flash of inspiration. I thought I would get the virus in My OPPO eliminated by a mobile service guy and then give it to her as a gift. Then I thought: "Why trust My stupid consort? Why not check the OPPO date and time setting Myself?" I did so and now it is OK! Actually, I am a great scholar Who cannot afford to waste time in frivolous activities. Also, a peaceful atmosphere at home is a sine qua non for A Great Scholar like Me.

WHO IS CEO OF YouTube?

A few months ago, I read that the Indian "engineer" Mr. Sundar Pichai ("Beautiful Beggar") was not only CEO of Google but also CEO of YouTube and Alphabet - but about an hour ago I heard a Russian guy on RT referring to a female American as CEO of YouTube! I checked Google which says that Susan Wojiciki * (I will have to re-check both spelling and pronunciation of her surname*) has been the CEO of YouTube FOR MANY YEARS! Weird. A britannica.com Google source says that Sundar Pichai WAS the CEO of Google - PAST TENSE. Has he been kicked out of Google, YouTube, and Alphabet?!! 

* CORRECTION: YouTube CEO's surname is Wocjicinski (Polish) - pronounced WO CHI SIN SKI (see Google and YouTube for pronunciation) - it seems to Me that cj is pronounced CH and c is pronounced S - hence SOO-ZAN Wo-CHI-SIN-ski. (No implication of SIN.)

A senior M.A. student at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, whenever he saw Me from a distance, used to sing KISS AND LOVE, changing My first name Kishalay for fun. [I was a B.Sc. Physics Honours student at St. Stephen's College in Delhi, which was an ALL-MALE College in those days. We had B.Sc. physics honours classes jointly with Hindu College students (boys plus three or four girls; I do not remember the exact number of My girl classmates from Hindu College; I never spoke to ANY of the girls) in the PHYSICS department of Delhi University. Struggling publishers and their editors and agents all secretly wish they could publish thousands of books every year but cannot do so because of obvious limitations and try to hide their tragic inability by sending printed rejection slips without perhaps even reading the manuscripts because they realize with sadness that they cannot afford to spend and risk their money! Very sad state of affairs at present. Tens of thousands of s. newbie writers like Rachel should learn to be mature and not explode bitterly and angrily at poor publishers and their poor agents for "rejecting" them - struggling publishers and editors and agents are hiding their pain! Self-publishing is the best option (at present) for s. cr. bipolar and currently recovering bipolar and ex bipolar females who want to be famous authors (authoresses). Kindle is very nice. Soon things will change, I am sure. All publishers big and small - including independent publishers (indies) - will be able to publish thousands of books with the aid of modern technology very soon. All people connected with books are the nicest people in the world - publishers, editors, literary agents, printers, book salesmen and salesgirls, librarians and booksellers. So please do not be unkind to them, My dears.

P. Dutton & Co Inc, New York. I still have My copy of Everyman edition of Turgenev: FATHERS AND SONS, translated by C. J. Hogarth, introduction by V. S. Pritchett. I bought it many years ago. I saw some Russian literary classics in the library of UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA) many years ago when I was a graduate (M.S.) student at UIC on . a university graduate scholarship from excellent department of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, UIC. I browsed among the UIC library shelves, as I had done among the library shelves of Delhi University when I was a student of St. Stephen's College, Delhi University. When I was a Ph.D. student at UIUC on a university graduate scholarship from the department of physiology and biophysics of UIUC - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA - a top U.S. university - I noticed that the main university library was not directly accessible and students could not browse among its bookshelves although it contained a vast number of books. I remember with joy that when I wanted to borrow a mathematics book from the university library - INTEGRAL TRANSFORMS by Ian Sneddon - which was not available in the UIC library - UIC library staff promptly brought it for Me from UIUC library the very next day (if I remember right). A library van ran daily between UIC and UIUC, two branches of famed University of Illinois.

I have collections of interesting short stories by Chekhov, a wonderful writer, perhaps the world's most delightful short story writer. (English translations.) 

"O. Henry" and "Saki" are also delightful writers of short stories, but Chekhov has a unique sincerity and warmth. O. Henry is well-known for twists. Saki is always sarcastic. (Perhaps I have imbibed their qualities of warmth and surprise twists and sarcasm by reading the three! P. G. Wodehouse is extremely entertaining.)

I have a very entertaining novel (in an English translation) by Gogol entitled DEAD SOULS! I have also a very funny and tragic short story Gogol entitled THE OVERCOAT.

I have English translations of AND QUIET FLOWS THE DON / QUIET FLOWS THE DON (two different English translations) and VIRGIN SOIL UPTURNED by Mikhail Sholokhov (who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature). The moving short story THE FATE OF A MAN by Mikhail Sholokhov will move the reader to tears.

I have not read any poem by Pushkin. I don't think he wrote much prose. I have a small little novel by Pushkin - it seems to be a cr. quasi-romantic quasi-funny story about a damsel in distress who prays to be rescued by God (in human form). I often feel like signing off long boring lifeless YouTube videos but often desist because it might seem rude to sensitive people if they find out. I have 4 sims fully charged, so I can afford to waste Internet memory. Many years ago, I read with great delight PRACTICAL CRITICISM by I. A. Richards, which analyzes poems in detail in a very entertaining fashion. Schaum's Outlines - published in India by TMH (Tata McGraw-Hill, New Delhi) - are excellent guide books for college and university students. (I have always felt very surprised that teachers and professors never tell students to buy and study excellent guide books which are easily available.) NCERT books are generally very boring and very difficult. (The NCERT mathematics textbooks for students of upper classes of high schools and for higher secondary classes 11 and 12 are very good.) 17 LAKH candidates appeared in the last NEET exam - perhaps only just a few thousand got seats. Study mainly to have fun learning. Don't study to only get seats and corrupt jobs that are reserved for male and female Nazis never mind meaningless competitive exams. Online learning may be good for you if your parents can afford it but you should buy and study excellent affordably priced guide books. YouTube has many excellent tutorials.

HIS MASTER'S VOICE 

The robot was old and rickety: only anticorrosive varnish saved it from rusting; it spoke in the squeaky voice that all ramshackle robots acquire before being sent for overhaul. And if Charlie, which was its name, still existed, it was only because it had belonged to Jackson. It was no longer a servant, it was a museum exhibit. It stood in its usual place in the entrance hall of Jackson's flat.

"Old 'un!" said Henry to the rickety robot. "You know more than anyone else on Earth about Jackson. We need to know his life in as much detail as possible."

The little red eye lit up dully on Charlie's forehead. The robot wheezed, and its voice seemed to come from far away.

"Listen!" said the robot solemnly. "The living voice of my living master."

From deep inside Charlie came a crackling, the indistinct noise that invariably accompanies the work of an electronic machine when it hasn't been serviced for a long time. Then a resonant young voice came through the interference: "Charlie, Charlie! Where are you? I'm going to have something to eat, so you mind the voltage doesn't fall! Six thousand three hundred and seventeen volts, that's the setting for today! And don't let anyone in to Ollie!"

"You've just heard the living Jackson!" announced the robot solemnly.

"Henry, that's shaken me!" muttered Roy. "What a voice!.."

"Repeat that conversation," requested Henry. "My brother has never heard your master's voice."

And whatever Jackson talked about, however much his cadences changed, whether he was cheerful or sad, tired or frisky, irritated or happy, the master's voice, mechanically reproduced by the servant, created a single picture, one image came over in sound. A young, energetic and zestful man was walking around the flat; he was witty and good-hearted, he was amazingly kind. It was his main feature, this kindness that permeated his whole being. And what was perhaps most amazing of all, what testified to his goodness, was not what he said, but his voice. The words were born of the situation and corresponded to it; such words could have been spoken by anyone else, but the voice belonged to Jackson alone, it was uniquely individual, it disturbed and it alarmed, it subdued and it beguiled...

When Jackson's voice fell silent, Roy responded to Henry's enthralled look as if to a thought expressed aloud.

"You're right, a remarkable man! What a pity we know so little about him."

"We'll learn more today," Henry turned to the robot. "Your master spent most of his time in the library, didn't he?"

It was not so often that the tactful Henry gave imperious orders and urged someone on so unceremoniously.

The robot stepped heavily into the last room.

Apart from the furniture, there were books - hundreds of books in glass cases: big and small, fat and thin, vividly illustrated or containing nothing but text.

Roy disliked books. He cast a weary glance at them and settled himself as best he could in an uncomfortable armchair. Henry, however, walked round the shelves, peering at the spines and taking out several volumes.

"So Ollie loved reading, you say? What books did she read?"

"Books on astronomy and physics, also on biology and..." The robot's solitary eye suddenly went purple with rage.

"You are hostile," he wheezed menacingly. "I did not say that Ollie loved reading, you said it yourselves... You will do Ollie harm. You must go."

Henry laughed and clapped the old robot on the shoulder. Now he spoke in his usual voice.

"Don't be cross, my dear chap. We know Jackson forbade you to talk about Ollie. And we don't want to do her harm, even though she's dead. Believe me, I feel no less respect for her than he did."

"You must go," repeated the robot hoarsely. "You have made me break my master's ban."

Before he had taken three paces towards the door, Henry stopped. In the narrow space between two book-cases hung a photograph of the owner of the flat with his monkey. Jackson was standing by the window. He was a man of medium height and his appearance matched his voice - a smiling face and merry eyes. Ollie had laid her paw on his shoulder, and it was before her that Henry stopped dead. A monkey would not have reached Jackson's shoulder in height though she was very much like a chimpanzee. But there was another strange thing about the monkey's appearance. Anyone who looked closely at the photograph could not help but notice the sorrow in Ollie's face: she stared with penetratingly intelligent, infinitely mournful eyes at anyone who stopped in front of her.

Henry turned to the robot again. 

"My friend! My old pal! I don't doubt that Jackson forbade you to record Ollie's voice, but if just one sound she made has been saved, just one sound!.."

The robot's answer came as if through ten doors.

"If you know that my master forbade me to preserve Ollie's voice, then you also ought to know that I daily wiped off the tapes everything that she accidentally recorded on them..."
